The Project. Birchbark Villas is a gated community located in Downey, CA. They were nearing completion of construction, and wanted to promote the housing to the Asian Community.

The Creative Challenge. This was mostly about lighting and shooting. At first I thought I had to rent lots of equipment, like a dolly, lots of grip equipment, and so forth to control the light in the various rooms. LA-18 also wanted a jib shot, to capture the whole community. Then I scouted the location and shot some prelimnary footage with the camera. Turns out the Panasonic DVX100 could handle the lighting without much of a problem, and the jib shot would require a large crew, much more than the budget allowed. So I ended up getting just a bit of equipment to take care of any serious issues. Color correction turned out to be a major consideration, because I had to shoot at the right temperature to get the warm interior feel. The other issue was setting the right exposure to get an interesting contrast level. Lastly, shooting in hazy sun was also a bit of an issue, but tweaking the white balance helped a lot.
